History

A Legacy Built on Faith, Unity & Selfless Service

The story of Talmakiwadi is not just the story of a housing society – it is the story of a vision, a community, and a shared dream
that began more than a century ago.

Our history is woven with the values of
Nishkama Karma,
Dana (giving),
dharma (duty),
and the profound warmth of the Chitrapur Saraswat community, whose spirit continues to guide us even today.

The Seeds of Our Story (Early 1900s)

Long before Talmakiwadi was built, the Chitrapur Saraswat community shaped a unique housing movement in Mumbai.

In March 1915, the Saraswat Co-operative Housing Society was formed – a rare and bold experiment for its time.

Its members did something extraordinary:

  • They contributed from their own earnings
  • They mortgaged personal property for community benefit
  • They built a model where everyone could have a home, not just a few

This spirit of collective upliftment is the foundation upon which Talmakiwadi stands.

The Birth of Talmakiwadi (1941)

On 5th April 1941, the Talmakiwadi Co-operative Housing Society was officially registered.

Those were challenging times.
Yet, our elders worked tirelessly with limited means and abundant faith.

They did not build Talmakiwadi for themselves alone.
They built it for all the families who would one day call this place their home.

It was a labour of love,
a vision strengthened by sacrifice.

The Spirit of Nishkama Karma

Our ancestors followed the teaching of the Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 17.20):

“That gift which is given out of duty
at the proper time and place
to a worthy person,
without expectation of return
is charity in the mode of goodness.”

For decades, community members placed service above self.

They:

  • HELPED new migrants find a home
  • SUPPORTED families in need
  • RAISED funds through collective effort
  • MORTGAGED land twice so that others could have a roof
  • BUILT a community stronger than the sum of its parts

Their example defines the soul of Talmakiwadi even today.

Growing Through the Decades

Over the years, Talmakiwadi transformed into one of South Mumbai’s most vibrant and respected residential communities.
Every decade added new layers to our story:

1940s - Foundations

Construction, registrations, community organising.

1950s–1970s - Growth & Expansion

More families arrived, facilities expanded, cultural life flourished.

1980s-2000s - Stability & Identity

Festivals, talent shows, Saraswat traditions, Konkani plays, and community events became cornerstones of life here.

2016 - Platinum Jubilee

A grand celebration marking 75 years of unity, featuring: Panchang vachan, Talent shows, Fun Fair at Sirur Square, Jam sessions, The Konkani play “Golmal 4” and A commemorative souvenir.

Honouring the Past, Inspiring the Future

Today, when we walk through the familiar lanes of Talmakiwadi, we walk with the blessings of those who built it.

Their vision lives in:

  • The laughter of children in the playground
  • The prayers in our temples
  • The energy of community events
  • The timeless bonds between neighbours
  • The pride we feel when we say “I belong to Talmakiwadi”

Our history is not just a timeline,
It is a living legacy.

A Heritage We Cherish. A Home We Preserve.

As Talmakiwadi grows into the future,
we remain deeply rooted in the values of our ancestors
values of unity, humility, service, culture, and love for our community.

We honour their sacrifices by carrying forward their dream,
preserving what they built,
and strengthening it for the generations yet to come.
